The contemporary term false flag describes covert operations that are designed to deceive in such a way that the operations appear as though they are being carried out by entities, groups, or nations other than those who actually planned and executed them. Operations carried out during peace-time by civilian organizations, as well as covert government agencies, can (by extension) also be called false flag operations if they seek to hide the real organization behind an operation.^[

Listed below are a few of the False Flag incidents that the U.S. government was involved in.

Operation Northwoods was a proposed operation against the Cuban government, 
that originated within the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of the United States government in 1962. 

Operation Gladio (Italian: Operazione Gladio) is the codename for a clandestine North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) "stay-behind" operation in Italy during the Cold War. Its purpose was to prepare for, and implement, armed resistance in the event of a Warsaw Pact invasion and conquest.

The Gulf of Tonkin incident (Vietnamese:  also known as the USS Maddox incident, 
is the name given to what were originally claimed to be two separate confrontations involving North Vietnam and the United States in the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin.)

Operation Ajax was launched by the CIA in 1953 in order to overthrow Iran's democratically elected leader, Mohammed Mosaddiq, and replace him with the Shah, a ruthless dictator. 

COINTELPRO was a series of clandestine, illegal FBI projects that infiltrated domestic political organizations to discredit and smear them.
